First-ever Wellington half marathon this summer

Through the streets of Wellington: Joanne Poole, Darlene Insley and Sally Peck, three dedicated members of the Wellington Running Club, get in a training run through the streets of Wellington early in March.

If you like to run, walk or just be outdoors there is an event in June that is just for you.

The Wellington Women’s Half Marathon and Half a half Marathon is a new event under the encouraging banner  “It’s a girl thing.”

The good news is that men can participate as well—though the target of the event is clearly women. There are no awards for finishing first, second or third.

“Everybody is a winner who participates,” says race founder Lisa Lindsay. “We hope people of all shapes, sizes and ages will come out to run, walk, crawl and laugh across the finish line. And you are contributing to a great cause.”

Proceeds from the event will go toward the community portion of the funding for the Lakeshore Athletic Track at CML Snider. Nearly two-thirds of the funds have already been committed toward the resurfacing of this aging facility—the only outdoor running track in the County.

The event takes place on June 18 starting from the Lakeshore Track, winding through the countryside west of the village, and finishing back at the track.

“Lots of support and sugary treats are awaiting you and your running partner or partners as you make your way through the beautiful route,” said Lindsay. “Regardless of what brings to the start line or what motivates you through the kilometres you will be travelling among friends.”
