The year is almost finished
The Christmas bells will chime
Let’s mosey ’round the year that’s past
And put our thoughts to rhyme

Six horses in the race for mayor
For five it would be curtains
And who should canter into first
But our own Peter Mertens

In the cutthroat world of donuts
He played a leading role
So will he lead us country style
In committee of the hole

Latch on to me, asked Sandy
As she unlatched the gate
With bewildering aversion
To engaging in debate

Lori had the slickest signs
And Monica’s ox was gourd
But all the horses won the race
To leave their listeners bored

The voters said to Peggy
It’s time to turn the page
This will free your Thursdays
For the Frere Bros. open stage

Laverne and Richard, John and Ray
Thanks for all you’ve done
There’s a silver lining somewhere
Just think outside the bun

Kaitlin wanted golf course homes
The County staff weren’t keen
But after shooting from the rough
They landed on the green

So who will buy the houses
And how much will they cost
Who will play the golf course
Forgive us if we’re lost

The trench war campaign still rages
’Round the red barn at West Lake
Can you folks not make your peace
Enough for goodness sake

The province told us turbines
Is what we’re going to choose
I’m glad, Ms. L. Dombrowski
That I’m not in your shoes

Let’s agree there was a mixup
And the premier meant to say
We’re telling you wear turbans
When it’s Diwali day

Our new cathedral DukeDome
Put flutters in our hearts
Would we one day host the Brier
Or perhaps mixed martial arts

High above ice level
Our banners we’ll adore
And not to pressure Marty,
but There’s room for many more

The sewage plant has gone online
To some folks’ disbelief
The end of trucking Picton’s crud
is Wellington’s relief

It only cost 10 million more
Than high priced help’s best guess
And water bills won’t triple, yet
They’ll double, more or less

There were changes at the Times as well
Full colour through and through
Jake Hooker sheathed his Underwood
And bid Sloeville adieu

Canada Day was special
Pumpkinfest was grand
Let’s give our village, Wellington
A well-deserved big hand

Merry Christmas to all!

Merry Christmas Dave ! Is that you out there ? Remember the table tennis club at your house ? And hitchhiking to Stouffville ….You are a great writer, I will have to send this on to Steve (stephen.garrod@me.com , I do believe). I remember borrowing “From A Flower To A Garden” from you, and for years I was haunted by the less well known second record in it, “For Children”, so I searched on line and got it finally – and it is still beautiful in its simplicity.
