Municipal Election 2018
Brad Nieman
Bloomfield/Hallowell Ward Two
When asked why he is running for a second term, Brad Nieman says he feels like he is just getting started. He says it’s always been a goal of his to run in a race like this.
“I am running because I believe that in my first term we have accomplished a lot. However, there is still much more that needs to be done. I want Prince Edward County to be a place where our children and grandchildren can afford to live and take part in all the amenities that make us who we are. We must also remember that the farmers are a huge part of what has made us what we are both today and in the future,” says Nieman
Some key concerns that Nieman sees his Ward facing include an accountable government, affordability to live and work in the County, creation of full-time jobs and affordable housing for all. Another vital concern for Nieman is health care in general, but in specific, making sure that the building of the new hospital stays on during the next term. At this delicate stage, the hospital development needs everyone’s support if the hospital is to become a reality.
When asked why voters should put him around the horsehoe, Nieman says he considers himself honest and approachable and believes strongly that he can do better for the taxpayers when it comes to accountability.
For Nieman, the issues facing Ward Two start with the fact that there is a housing crisis and it’s one of many topics that he looks to tackle head-on if re-elected in October.
“Waterworks rates are not in line with neighbouring municipalities, roads are crumbling with no long-term plans to replace or repair. We have been working on a plan for transit that will serve all of Prince Edward County. We must continue to see this project through,” says Nieman.
As far as opportunities, Nieman sees bringing in more industry as vital to the continued success of the County. He would also lobby the government for more funding in whatever areas we may be struggling. Replacing County Road 49 can be an opportunity as well, with all the negative press it recently received as being one of the worst roads in Canada.
Nieman is hoping that his work and dedication to council since 2014 will be the deciding factor for the people still up in the air when it comes to making a choice in Ward Two. There are three other candidates in the race for Bloomfield/Hallowell and the competition is neck and neck. Nieman is betting that his track record will speak for itself and people will choose with their hearts.
Nieman spent 20 years as a Prince Edward County employee and is currently the Municipal Infrastructure Supervisor for another municipality. He has accreditations in conflict resolution and mediation and is a licensed operator in water/wastewater. Nieman feels he is already comfortable managing and leading in a municipal environment and is looking forward to a possible second term serving his community. He is married, has four children and seven grandchildren.
