Municipal Election 2022
Chris Braney
Hillier Ward Seven
Afarmer and Hillier resident, Chris Braney has served as vice-chair and chair of two school boards in his 30 years of experience in municipal governance, policy and finance. He pointed out that his connections to the County’s municipal, farming, and business communities have given him extensive experience with integrated strategic planning with elected officials and local agencies. “Throughout my political career I have been an enthusiastic and creative leader with the ability to bring experience, new ideas, and energy to the council table,” he said, adding that the next council term must face the economic uncertainty that has made life difficult for County residents and farmers.
With his two daughters living on the farm, Braney feels strongly about affordable housing. “We would like them both to have the opportunity to live and work in the County when they decide to raise their own families,” he said. “It’s important to have young families living in the County so our community is vibrant and our local schools are supported.” Noting that affordable housing is the key to stabilizing growth, he said he supports the efforts of the Affordable Housing Corporation.
On the issue of managing tourism, Braney said Council should not lose sight of the concerns and needs of County residents to ensure they have access to their communities and the waterfront. “I’m optimistic that we can create new ideas to improve this outlook.”
When asked about the waterworks system, he said it is an ongoing and challenging issue. “As a farmer in Hillier, I know the pressures of water here,” he said, adding that enhancing the efficiency and cost effectiveness for residents will be a key priority. “I believe we can achieve this goal by having new developments paying into the infrastructure of our system in order to offset rate costs to town residents.”
Braney said his work as an appointed member of the Prince Edward County Heritage Advisory Committee shows his passionate commitment to the protection and restoration of the County’s heritage buildings and properties. “Hillier is a ward that is rich in agricultural heritage and achievement, and I want to support and enhance environmental sustainability within our community.”
As for the size of council, he said he agrees with the recommendations that Council be downsized and would support a review and a fresh debate on the issue.
