CML Snider Elementary School featured in Saturday Night Live skit

The Saturday Night Live bit on the weekend was a send-up of an endof- year message from teachers to students. “Y’all won,” declares Maya Rudolph, posing as a teacher in the skit along with cast members Andrew Dismukis and Heidi Gardner. The skit took a satirical look at the sense that the power balance in public schools has shifted away from teachers and administrators toward entitled students and their parents.

“Covid broke something that we can’t fix,” says Maya Rudolph’s character in defeat.

The bit that caught the publisher’s attention, however, was the iconic school used in the background. A photo of CML Snider Elementary School in Wellington is featured prominently—as the setting—in the skit.

It is unclear where or how the producers of SNL came across the image of the village’s school.

Curiously, CML Snider was a highly regarded principal of the Wellington school who commanded respect and discipline among the student body, teachers, and, indeed, the community. Whether by accident or intent, the producers chose an interesting school to contrast modern pedagogical experience.

The school celebrated its centennial in 2022. The clip can be found here.

Go Cyclones.
