Christmas in the Village
Ameliasburgh celebrates and old-time Christmas
The Ameliasburgh old-time “Uber” was in full operation on Saturday, ferrying passengers through the village during its annual Christmas celebration. Passengers could hop on the horse-drawn wagon for a ride with stops at the Town Hall, Masonic Hall and Heritage Village.
There was live music at the Town Hall, and visitors could warm up with mulled apple cider or hot chocolate, with muffins, cookies or tarts available as well. Kids and adults could try their hand at building a pinecone bird feeder or decorating a gingerbread cookie. Volunteers Sheila Eagen and Sheila Aspinwall made all 99 gingerbread cookies available for decorating. Members of the Masonic Lodge had the soup kettle going, offering two varieties of heritage soups from Sprague’s. Santa and Mrs. Claus welcomed visitors at the church in the Heritage Village. Santa has gone high-tech this year, with text message confirmation of Christmas wishes and a new app-driven interface for measuring naughty or nice. Thankfully, letters to Santa’s workshop can still be sent via post. Naturalist Terry Sprague was available to show visitors around the De- Vries Collection, and Joanne Killick-Hill offered a taste of traditional cottage pudding in the log cabin, where the wood cookstove was casting out a little warmth on a cold winter’s day. Visitors to the schoolhouse, however, had to endure their lessons in the cold.
