Family fun day at Mill Pond Park

The Bloomfield Hallowell Recreation Committee held their third annual old-fashioned BBQ picnic at the Mill Pond park in Bloomfield on Saturday. Dozens of families came out to enjoy a day of fun activities, with food and drink available at “old-fashioned” prices if they didn’t bring their own picnic. “This is a day for families to come out and enjoy themselves at little or no cost, and have a day that’s just fun,” said rec committee member Joanne Adema. Barbequed hot dogs and hamburgers were available for purchase, along with soft drinks, water and cotton candy.

The local fire department was on hand, giving out various safety-themed goodies for both adults and children. Curious youngsters could take a look at some firefighting equipment or sit in the driver’s seat of a pumper truck. There was free face painting from Paint Me Up, and Vicki Cowan had a busy day that included a couple of adults in the line-up as well. County Kids Read was giving free books, and members from the Friends of Bloomfield Library were there to encourage families to join their reading program. The library also offers “adventure kits” to encourage families safely enjoy the outdoors. Visit any library branch for more details.

There were nature exhibits from the South Shore Joint Initiatives and Quinte Conservations, as well as a game of skill from the Baxter Arts Centre. Fun activities in the field included a ball toss, a fishing game and bubble making, and well as two bouncy castles.
