Exploring South America

The history of grape growing and wine production in the southern hemisphere is linked to the discovery and settling of new territories by European explorers. Over the coming weeks we will explore how and when the various countries developed their own unique wine culture that, in many ways, reflected the tastes of their homelands. Since South America was the first southern continent to experience the impact of European cultures, such as Spain and Portugal, this will be our point of departure. Our adventures will begin with a journey through Bolivia, Peru, and Chile.

This week, treat yourself to a bottle of Lighthall Vineyards 2009 Reserve Chardonnay ($25). This wine has a burst of citrus fruit, ripe pineapple, white flower and hazelnut on the nose with a creamy, Tahitian vanilla and hints of lime on the palate. The balanced acidity makes this a delightful wine to pair up with a variety of summer dishes. This is a natural alongside chicken, fresh pickerel, lobster, or a bowl of delicious French fries with lemon aioli.
