Football and fine wine

It is Rugby World Cup time in New Zealand and so far so good. The Canadian squad has excelled yet I must confess I was delighted when Ireland topped the world champions, Australia, in their match last Saturday.

On to the wine regions of New Zealand. Consider if you will, New Zealand produces approximately 0.02% of the world’s wine production; however, their wines are frequently sought after for their unique styles, reflecting the difference of terroir in the North and the South Island.

New Zealand reflects the best of both cold climate and maritime region blessed with an abundance of volcanic soil. The North Island grows Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot) and Syrah in Hawkes Bay; Chardonnay is the varietal of choice in Gisbourne. The South Island produces sublime Pinot Noir from the vineyards of Martinborough and further south in Central Otago.

New Zealand is renowned for its expression of both Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Their cachet wines such as Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, are in huge demand and command great respect on the world market. It is also home to a population of four million humans, 40 million sheep, and punches way above its weight when it comes to fine wines and rugby.

Recently released is the Rosehall Run Vineyards 2009 Chardonnay “sur Lie” ($14.95). Co-Owner/Vintner Dan Sullivan has sourced fruit from both the County and Niagara. The combined result is aromas of papaya and white flowers, with mouth-watering Granny Smith apple, ripe peach, lemon zest and balanced acidity. This wine is well crafted and a real palate pleaser. Excellent value!
