Lesser-known gems

Visiting County wineries is a wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon. It also provides a way to taste the wide variety of wines produced in our area.

We tend to forget the wide selection of wines that are produced in Prince Edward County. We have more than 35 wineries and grape growers, each of which tends to grow a selection of vines to stagger the mind. We should be proud of our award-winning chardonnays and pinot noirs, and recognition as a region particularly suitable for outstanding sparkling wines. But we should not forget the sublime wines created in the County from lesser-known varietals. We are blessed with people who were not afraid to plant vines that do not share the cachet of the more recognizable vines.

In order to understand what I mean, you need to get out to the wineries. By and large, most of the County’s wine is sold in tasting rooms, and is not available at the L.C.B.O. Production of some varieties might be less than 200 cases and, because of their uniqueness, these wines sell out quickly. I encourage you all to visit our wineries, where you will be rightly amazed at the depth, scope and sophistication of County wines.

East & Main Bistro and Pomodoro had a wonderful Winemaker’s Dinner last Sunday. In celebration of their 10th anniversary, winemaker Vita Zalnieriunas and Richard Johnston of By Chadsey’s Cairns showcased many of these lesser-known wines that I have been talking about. Among the wines presented was a most memorable, estate-grown, 2010 Riesling ($23) paired with hand-made braised rabbit ravioli. The combination was outstanding.

As I recall, the grapes were blessed with a kiss of Noble Rot, which enhanced the flavors of this fine wine. The aromas showed waves of citrus and honey with the trademark petroleum background. The mouth was a cascade of red grapefruit and manuka honey, coupled with a superb Granny Smith apple acidity. This is a great wine that is delicious with food, or served by itself.

By Chadsey’s Cairns is located at 17432 Loyalist Parkway, just west of Wellington.
