Never forgotten
There is always a visionary who imagines the potential of a region and then—through force of personality— makes his dream a reality.
In 1983 Ed Neuser decided to plant grapevines on his property in Prince Edward County. Today we mourn his passing, and extend sincere condolences to his life partner, Rita Kaimins. We should also pay tribute, and celebrate his contribution to the wine industry of Prince Edward County.
Ed purchased a piece of paradise and, over the period of a decade, created a gemstone: a vineyard with a beautifully designed winery and tasting room. He also had the foresight to set a tasteful dining room within the vineyard, overlooking the lake, which attracted a faithful following.
He was immensely proud of Waupoos. Any time I had the occasion to visit, he would be found in the tasting room, or parking lot, accompanied by his ambassador and best friend, Felix (the dog). Ed sold Waupoos Estates two years ago. The new owners have respected Ed’s vision while making wonderful improvements in certain areas.
With an ever-present twinkle in his eye, Ed Neuser was a modern “gallant” who made his own stamp on the local wine industry. It is hard to imagine how quickly time flies; I vividly remember my last conversation with Ed at Hagerman Farms where we were both picking up fresh produce…
Ed was a pioneer who inspired like-minded people to invest their time and fortune into this region. Within two decades, his vision became reality when the County was proclaimed a Designated Viniculture Area.
THIS WEEK’S SUGGESTION
Rather than recommend a wine this week, I suggest a drive to Waupoos Estates to sample their selection of wines. You will find wines that suit every palate, and sell at a reasonable price. While in the tasting room you might perhaps raise your glass and make a toast to Ed Neuser and his vision.
