A beginner’s guide to Wellington’s 150th birthday
Daniel Reynolds was the first of European descent to settle in Prince Edward County—carving a home out of the woods along Wellington bay around 1770. He recruited native residents in the area to help build his home that still stands on Main Street in Wellington.
When Wellington gathers on Canada Day to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the formation of the village—a descendent of Daniel Reynolds and members of the First Nation community who lived here before Reynolds— will join in a ceremony to honour the celebration.
It is just one of the highlights of several days of activities marking Wellington’s 150th.
Another is a musical revue of the history of Wellington to be staged at the Highline Hall at the Wellington and District Community Centre. The show will feature an array of songs, dance and theatre in order to tell the story of Wellington Thru the Ages. The curtains rise on the musical gala at 7 p.m. on Friday June 28. Tickets are just $10 available at Sidestreet Gallery.
The Lions Club is staging a celebrity Dragon Boat race in the channel on Saturday morning. Nearby the Wellington Elks Lodge is hosting a Kids’ Fishing Derby with prizes for the biggest catch.
There will be a wide variety of food events— pancakes by the Friends of the Museum, BBQ chicken at the Legion, for example—and music all through the village on the long weekend.
To whet your appetite for this history-making event in the meantime, Evan Nash is posing a series of Wellington trivia questions on his Wellington Home Hardware Facebook page. There you can test your knowledge of the people and events that shaped this community.
Make your plans to be in Wellington this coming Canada Day long weekend.
