Municipal Election 2018
Barry Turpin
Picton Ward One
Barry Turpin has been a councillor for the last four terms. He is a County native with a wealth of knowledge in the happenings of this region. Over those past four terms, Turpin believes that he has proven to be a person who listens and brings a reasonably balanced approach on problem solving when it comes to council issues. Turpin has the time in his life to devote himself properly to the position and currently assists constituents who need help dealing with Shire Hall in whatever way needed. Turpin is running in Picton because Bloomfield by itself is no longer a ward and he believes that he can contribute significantly to the new council. He has lived in Picton previously and is there every day as a member of council. When asked about concerns facing Ward 1, Turpin had a succinct response for his top concern.
“I think that all citizens want to live in a County that is fiscally responsible and considered a wellrun organization,” says Turpin.
Turpin was recently integral in recruiting doctors to this area, and was front and centre helping deal with the water crisis the County faced last year.
Other issues on Turpin’s mind are all aspects of housing, from more housing to affordable housing to more rental accommodations. He is also looking into the Airbnb rules and regulations for any pertinent information.
“Housing is a very important issue in all its forms and the current council has begun a number of projects that I would like to help move forward. We are all concerned with rising costs and must be diligent to keep this in mind when decisions are made. Healthcare and community safety are also important and we must do our best to improve these issues,” says Turpin.
In relation to concerns, Turpin says that he is open to listen to any and all suggestions for the betterment of Picton and the County. Before his career in politics, Turpin spent 30 years as a mathematics and physical education teacher with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and used to run a bed and breakfast in Bloomfield with his wife Elizabeth, who unfortunately passed away this year. With four terms under his belt, Turpin is still hungry to contribute to his community and be a vital member of council for the next four years.
