A day of fun activities for the whole family in Consecon

It was a day of family fun in Consecon on Saturday, starting with the soapbox derby, sponsored by the Ameliasburgh Recreation Committee. Thirty-four children entered the competition, which was divided into three age groups. The races took place on Consecon Main Street at the east end of the village. The gentle but long slope allowed the racers to build up a good head of speed by the time they reached the finish line. Straw bales were placed at the end of the course, as well as around the base of street signs and hydro poles along the way, to provide a measure of safety should any of the competitors veer off course. There were six sleek soapbox racers provided by the rec committee. Each racer had two attempts, and there were cash prizes for the three fastest finishers in each age category, plus a trophy for the best times. Among the seven- and eight-year-olds, Kathleen took the trophy, while Tommy and Declan were second and third respectively. This was Kathleen’s first soapbox derby and she was very excited to win the trophy. In the nine and 10 age category, Matthew took first place while Vada came in second and Tiger placed third. In the 11 and 12 age category, Payton—Matthew’s sister— came in with the fastest aggregate time, with Asher second and Finley in third place. Each child in the competition received a coupon for a free hot dog.

The fun continued in the village with games in the park and an obstacle course set up by the local firefighters. A petting zoo with ducks, chickens, goats and a portly pig from Heal with Horses was set up outside the Straw Flower Café, and the Loyalist Masonic Lodge Number 50 offered barbecued sausages and hot dogs with proceeds going towards men’s health projects. There was a book sale at the library branch, as well as several yard sales offering a selection of interesting and previously loved items. Later that afternoon The Freeloaders played classic rock tunes in the park, and in the evening the Barn Bandits played at the Consecon Legion, with over 100 people enjoying the music and a BBQ.
