Family Day in Wellington
Fun for the whole family at Wellington Community Centre
There was a whole host of family activities at the Wellington and District Community Centre on Monday, Family Day. Many people took advantage of the free skating at the arena, from youngsters having their first skates strapped on, to those gingerly feeling their way along the boards, to those who can glide effortlessly in any direction. The local firefighters were on hand with information displays and goodies for the kids—and Sparky took a turn on the rink too. The South Shore Joint Initiative had a table where kids could make a pine cone bird feeder, and the County library had a huge box of Lego pieces free for the taking, as well as a button-making machine where kids could choose from a number of designs.
In the main hall there was a booth from the Belleville branch of the Royal Astronomical Society with information about the upcoming solar eclipse in April, where the County will be an ideal location. There will also be a presentation at the Picton library on March 2 about how to safely observe the eclipse. The Prince Edward County Lions Club had a series of games for kids and adults as well as a colouring table where kids could decorate a small cloth bag. County Kids Read had books to give away, and there was a colourful play area set aside for toddlers.
The highlight of the day was the free soup lunch coordinated by the Wellington Rotary Club. Businesses and individuals provided a tasty selection of soups with flavours from around the world—Thai sweet potato soup, Italian minestrone, Tunisian chickpea soup, Texas cowboy soup—with dinner rolls provided by Foodland. There were sweets as well, with fudge samples and popcorn from Cup O Fudge, butter tarts from Rachel’s and chocolate chip cookies.
