Municipal Election 2018
Gord Fox
Bloomfield/Hallowell Ward Two
Gord Fox has witnessed many changes to the County over the past years. He feels that the County has benefitted from the influx of newcomers and businesses, but feels that it is important that this area also stays true to its cultural, historical, and agricultural roots. An ideal scenario in Fox’s mind would be honouring that heritage while keeping an eye on adapting and evolving in this new technological age. Throughout his time in the County, Fox has seen agribusiness, the arts and increased tourism all have influence on the changing face of this community.
Fox was born and raised in the County and spent 28 years with the Ministry of Social Services, working with and providing services to the Prince Edward County community. A two-term councillor for Hallowell, Ward 6 from 2000-2006, Fox also was a member of the Board of Health at that time. Fox was re-elected in 2014 and is looking to provide his services now for Ward Two, which has a unique set of issues that his previous Ward did not have to deal with.
Some of the concerns that Fox sees individuals bringing forward in Ward Two are highlighted by road conditions, by-law issues, Picton Terminals, the proposed development at Picton Heights, the proposed/existing sand pits on Ridge Rd and protecting the Waring Creek watershed and assistance for the Ward’s farming community.
When asked why Ward Two residents should put a checkmark next to his name on the ballot, Fox says that he has the experience, drive and passion for another council term.
“I have proven my commitment to serving the constituents of my ward and making sure their concerns are dealt with. Being retired, I can fully commit to the time afforded to attending council, Committee of the Whole, planning and various other board meetings that are required for councillors. I truly enjoy being a councillor and working with people,” says Fox.
As far as ranking the top issues facing the County today, Fox finds it difficult to do because he feels that all are equally important. Also, a lot of issues are intertwined in his mind, so to move forward they must all be dealt with collectively. Housing, property tax and transit are all major issues facing Ward 2. Waterworks rates and improving the existing water system to allow more users and possible housing developments will help to control rising rates. Roads will continue to be a financial issue for the County for years to come, and Fox also believes that healthcare is important to our future growth and current well-being. A strong healthcare system will attract new-comers, retain the youth population and provide the necessary care to the County’s aging population.
For the upcoming council, Fox sees the opportunities of being able to look back on the accomplishments and failures of past councils, make improvements wherever possible and learn from any mistakes. He has seen before that new council members will require some time to understand the workings and responsibilities of council when bringing forward new ideas. Fox thinks it is up to the senior council members to help the new additions wade into the waters of municipal politics.
“Hopefully new members of council will bring forward their priorities, contribute new ideas to improve the workings of council and it is important that not only new members, but those returning to council continue to question policy and decision-making and to hold the CAO and staff accountable to the taxpayers of the municipality,” says Fox.
Other opportunities that Fox sees for council are to continue to build on and improve the accomplishments of the previous council regarding developing a framework committee, making steps towards affordable housing and the continued accomplishments of the Community and Economic Development Commission. Fox is excited about a possible forth term on council, and hopes to bring his experience to the table, which will continue to drive his passion for serving his community and the people of the County.
