Holy Hanna
Dukes are East Division Champions
The Wellington Dukes never had the lead against the Whitby Fury in Game 7 of the East Division final game on Tuesday. That is until Quinn Hanna found himself alone in the slot in front of Fury netminder Luke Pearson with just 46 seconds remaining in regular time. He squared his body, picked a target and fired. Perhaps the biggest goal of his young career. The large contingent of Dukes fans had vastly out-cheered their squad. They were all on their feet now.
Just a couple minutes earlier Whitby’s Carson Gallagher had rung the puck off of the Dukes cross bar on a one-timer. It was that close to going the other way.
Tyson Gilmour had a pair of goals and an assist. So to did Elijah Gonsalves. Each time the Dukes appeared to be on the ropes, this line responded with a push-back shift. Keenan Eddy scored Wellington second goal tying the game in the second, after the Dukes had spotted Whitby a 2-0 lead in the first.
Now the Dukes get ready to face the North York Rangers. It will be a formidable test. The Rangers are backstopped by the best netminder in the league—the County’s Jett Alexander. Brandon Yeamans and Dante Spagnuolo lead the offense.
They are killers on special teams—first overall in penalty killing in the regular season with 90 per cent kill rate. They were second on the power play—scoring on a fifth of their chances with the man advantage.
