Annual fundraiser for Picton Rotary Club

Hundreds of visitors took the opportunity to see two spectacular County waterfalls during the Picton Rotary Club’s annual Easter weekend waterfall tour fundraiser. The waterfalls were in full flow, thanks to the recent rainfall as well as the continuing spring freshet after one of the snowiest winters in recent memory. In fact, there was still some ice clinging to rock wall behind Jackson’s Falls. Both waterfalls are on private property, and the Rotary Club is grateful for the support of the landowners.

The falls at Cape Vesey have a long vertical drop before the water cascades down a rocky incline to a wide marsh on the shore of Lake Ontario. Even though it is still early springtime and the weather is cool, visitors to these falls were greeted by a chorus of frogs who call the marsh home. Jackson’s Falls are not quite as high as the one at Cape Vesey, but it is wider and the water appears as a delicate veil over the limestone cliff. A shallow stream of water flows into Black Creek. Sharp-eyed visitors noticed spawning fish in the pool beneath the falls. Many visitors come to see both falls year after year, and they make it a family outing, memorialized by the cell phone selfie. But the event also attracts die-hard shutterbugs who seek to capture a unique image of the falls.

There is no cost to visit the falls, which are only open to the public on this one weekend. However, donations are gratefully accepted. This event is one of a number of fundraisers for the Picton Rotary Club; the other significant ones are the annual Lilac Ride and the golf tournament. This year, the Club will direct some of the funds to the ROC Youth Centre. The Club has restarted their student exchange program—a County student will spend the year in Germany, and the Club will welcome an exchange student from Japan, who will be billeted with a local family. The Rotary Club supports a number of local initiatives, including the HUB Child & Family Centre, the Hospital Foundation and the food bank. It is also continuing to provide humanitarian support in Ukraine.
