Sensual persuasion

We eat to survive. On special occasions, we may treat ourselves to a home-cooked dinner or shared dining experience with a loved one or with friends. Eating provides us tactile feedback—from the presentation on the plate, to the aromas in the air, to the taste on the palate. We respond in a fundamental, basic way that nearly approaches the realm of sexual pleasure. We do not require wine to savour the moment.

But the feeling is magnified when the meal is accompanied by the appropriate wine. A certain something enlivens the senses when food and wine combine: the tactile sensations of food are enhanced by the acids and flavours of wine. It is a perfect marriage, undemanding and ever giving.

All the same, it has been found that wine, especially red wine, can elevate one’s sex drive. A recent study carried out in Italy suggests there is more to the consumption of red wine than was expressed in the ’80s reggae hit, Red Red Wine. Apparently, a glass or two of red wine will elevate sex drive in women, while having the opposite affect for men. As with most studies, there is a caveat: one should practice moderation in the consumption of alcohol, regardless of the form.

THIS WEEK’S PICK
I recently previewed Hubbs Creek 2012 Riserva Pinot Noir. This wine will dramatically make you appreciate the exceptional potential of our region. John Battista and his brother, Joseph Calvieri, first planted Pinot Noir vines in 2002. Their wines have since grown a devoted following.

2012 was a superb vintage that allowed winemakers to choose specific blocks to create wines that display the potency of our local terroir. Hubbs Creek’s 2012 Riserva will be no exception, especially as the quantity of this release is limited.

At this stage, the wine displays the attributes of a classic young Burgundy, with barnyard and fruit notes in balance. It will be released in the spring.

Hubbs Creek Vineyard and Winery is located on Danforth Rd.
