Andrew McPherson (right) has a grove of shagbark hickory on his property in Demorestville. These trees are native to Ontario and grow to more than 100 feet and live up to 350 years. The Seedy Saturday event at Books & Company offered him an opportunity to talk about this tree and share seed stories with others, including Lizzie Moore (left).
They are keepers of ancient genetics—the protectors of heirloom species of plants and trees. And once a year they gather, locally in Picton, to exchange their seeds with others—folks like them, eager to preserve rare, unusual and hard-to-find species. They include growers, gardeners and the curious.
