Spring into summer, fly into fall
And then? Well, and then it was half-past September and, like a lot of you, I’m left wondering where the heck summer went. Autumn happens this week. I still have “spring things” to do. When I was a kid I liked autumn because it meant cooler weather, Thanksgiving, Hallowe’en and school. Yeah, I kinda liked elementary school when I was a kid. I’m not a kid anymore and I still feel like I’ve got a lot of summery things left to do. The front porch isn’t going to prime and paint itself, for instance, but we had so much rain, early in the Summer, we just about gave up on the front porch. The new pillars on the side porch won’t do a Disney animation spectacle on me and dance their way into their rightful place with the wave of a magic wand. And didn’t LOML and I just open the pool? Now it’s almost time to shut it down for the winter. On the bright side, we did manage to get ourselves out to the Milford Fair on Saturday and then to the Sandbanks Fall Getaway Fun Run on Sunday. Aside from the extra bodies we’ve been hosting in “this old house”, we managed to do the weekend with extra, extra bodies. With all of the guests in the house it’s a wonder no one was injured. Feelings weren’t trampled upon, and plans for Thanksgiving, this year and next, were made. The tears were limited, although little girls were slightly disappointed over having to go to bed “early” after the bonfire and s’mores on Saturday night. On another brighter side, we didn’t run out of toilet paper or pool towels. Between my daughter-in-law and I, we probably went to the grocery store more often in three days than most large families would go in a month.
I’ve said it before, and here I go again. The nice thing about September is the slowdown in tourist traffic and noise. As a family, we were finally able to sit out on a patio, enjoy a drink and actually hear the other person speaking. There’s a lot to look forward to doing in the next few weeks. On Saturday, TASTE will be debuting in an interesting venue. It’s nice when the next generation of entrepreneurs, movers and shakers get their creative on and turn things upside down. On Saturday, September 23, at Loch Sloy Hangar the TASTE event will happen. I know all y’all have heard of the event, but if you haven’t been, get out there. Meet some new people. Taste some new tastes. Try a new brew or wine or cider. You know you wanna. If you’re looking for a day away from the County, think about heading out to the Brighton Applefest. It starts on Thursday and runs until Sunday. It’s a delicious time with something for just about everyone. The nice thing about Applefest is you can have your apples and TASTE too.
Of course, LOML and I plan on spending the weekend attending at least one of these events. Since we’re retired, we could be doing those Spring things during the workweek. We could be, but we’ve got to catch up on our reading and, seriously, those porches aren’t going anywhere now, are they?
