School board agrees to help fund resurfacing athletic track at school in Wellington
The last shoe has finally dropped. On Monday night the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board unanimously approved a third of the funding for a project to rehabilitate the Lakeshore Track at CML Snider School in Wellington. Describing the opportunity as a “bargain it could not pass up” the board put the final piece in the complex fundraising puzzle.
Community activist Lisa Lindsay has been the key driver of the project to improve the County’s only competitive running track— vowing to raise a third of the $120,000 project cost from the community if the municipality and the school board each kicked in a third.
The County confirmed its portion at budget time earlier this year. By then Lindsay had already received commitments for much of her community portion. Then it was up to the school board.
With Monday’s announcement, Lindsay’s eight-year struggle was finally over.
“With all the financial pressure on the school board and council these days I am just elated that these organizations understood and supported the importance of this project for the children of this community,” said Lindsay. “I believe this is the perfect model for how we do community projects in the future.”
Work to resurface the track is expected to occur this summer and be ready for the return of students in the fall.
