The race is on

Spin the wheel: Prince Edward-Hastings PC candidate Tod Smith (centre) and Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh on Main Street, Picton last week with the image of Premier Dalton McGuinty looking on.

Provincial candidates begin to square off

The days are becoming a bit shorter. The kids are about set to go back to school. A glorious summer in the County is beginning to slip away. An election can’t be far behind.

The signs of the October 6 provincial election began to appear around the region over the last week.

In Picton the Tories used a Wheel of Tax to demonstrate their main message of Premier Dalton McGuinty as the Taxman. Each section of the wheel features a tax either adopted or considered by the current government.

Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh joined Prince Edward-Hastings PC candidate Tod Smith in the demonstration in front of the Regent Theatre on Wednesday.

Chudleigh says that Dalton McGuinty has vowed in two previous elections not to raise taxes, only to break those promises once in office. He says “sneaky” ecotaxes, the HST, and a new health tax are proof Dalton McGuinty can’t be trusted. He warns that Ontarians should expect more of the same— predicting new taxes on carbon and municipal water if Dalton McGuinty is granted a third term.

Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Leona Dombrowsky says the Tories are being dishonest to Ontario voters on the issue of taxes.

“They intend to keep the HST and health tax,” said Dombrowsky. “They are a group of folks who will say whatever it takes to get elected.”

Tories Chudleigh and Smith say a PC government will give communities the ability to decide where and how many industrial wind turbines will be located in their community.

“Under Dalton McGuinty municipal councils have lost their say,” said Chudleigh. “They are incurring costs as these developers move into the community but they don’t have a voice. Communities like Prince Edward County are tired of having IWTs shoved down their throat. Tod is going to give municipalities the power back to your community to decide if you want industrial wind turbines in your midst.”

Dombrowsky says the election is a referendum on her government’s record.

“Ontario voters will have a clear choice,” said Dombrowsky. “Do we continue the path going forward or do we go backward—back to cuts in important services?”

On the energy file it is full speed ahead on her government’s green energy plans.

“We have a plan to protect the environment and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. In doing so we are making Ontario the green energy leader in the world. We have created thousands of jobs across the province.

“The Tories on the other hand will continue to focus on fossil fuel as a source of energy. Fossil fuels are only going in one direction. Up.”

Tory candidate Smith says one issue comes up at nearly every doorstep he has visited so far.

“Hydro bills by far the number one,” said Smith. “Electricity is a necessity, not a luxury.”

He reports a broad sense that Ontarians are overtaxed and the tax dollars are being misspent.

Dombrowsky says Ontario voters should know what services PC leader Tim Hudak plans to cut.

“He has said he is going to make cuts—but not told us what he is going to cut,” said Dombrowsky. “He says health care and education won’t be impacted—but that is what Mike Harris said, and he closed 28 hospitals.

“I was at AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) last week and a chill went through the crowd when Tim Hudak refused to commit to the upload that is underway taking the burden of social services off municipalities. This will have an impact on property taxpayers.”

But Chudleigh and Smith say the McGuinty government has lied so often in the past Ontario voters no longer believe it.

Green candidate Treat Hull says neither party has addressed the critical issue facing the next provincial government—debt.

“Ontario has its back to the wall financially” according to Hull. “Unless we face up to this and begin to reduce our record debt levels we will have little or no means to invest in the province’s future, to stimulate the economy or to look after those in the event of an economic downturn.

“Even with interest rates at an all-time low, as close to zero as they can get, debt service ranks right after health care and education as the third largest expenditure in the provincial budget.”

“Unfortunately both the Liberals and Conservatives have both chosen to gloss over the deficit.”

“They (Liberals and Conservatives) are both making election promises that may get them elected but that will increase the deficit, making election promises and putting the cost on the voters’ VISA bill,” said Treat Hull, Green Party candidate.

It is, perhaps, a sure sign of election season when the barbs become this pointed.

This upcoming Provincial election is about control of our future and how it is achieved. It’s the most important election Ontarians have ever had to face in the history of our Ontario.
Politics has become a movement of “ public relations “ of media spin . Of carefully selected words , to imply fear , suggest doom . To redirect , misinform , change the issue course , and confuse the true issues Ontarians have and rightly feel concerned about.
    For one end to control.
For those of you today that still feel that you have the luxury of not bothering to vote , or feel not voting is a protest vote , think again.
You no longer have that luxury.
In January 2012 Ontario will adopt Cap and Trade.
By adopting Cap and Trade , Ontario will save the planet from certain death , the polar bears will have a future , the ice caps will not thaw , the water levels will not rise
Because Industrial Wind Turbines and Solar panels are here..we are saved!
All the while we continue cutting our forests down that clean our air , continue to increase our population putting more demand on resources , create more pollution , require more food and water . And more people will be shopping in our Mega Malls.
Since the Ontario Liberals came to power 8 years ago , there has been a war on electricity. Using power has been spun as evil. We have been pushed to conserve , use different light bulbs , buy new furnaces , windows , insulate our homes , buy new appliances .
    To combat evil electricity.
An entire new language has been born. Green , sustainable this or that , carbon footprint . It has been used so often by media , that we use the language as well without even realizing we speak the spin.
The public relations campaign has been masterful. Pure genius.
We have environmental groups , aligned with global Industry polluters , political parties and select media together for a social global war. Climate Change.
We are bombarded with the notion that if we cut our power use , be socially more responsible by being colder in the winter , hotter in the summer , buying new $40 light bulbs , new appliances and “green” products that cost more , recycle our trash , and use clear garbage bags , we will save the world from destruction by our thoughtless carbon footprint.
Along comes the magic bullet..Alternate Energy. Plus partner power generation.
Wind or solar plus partner power generation being Gas or Coal.
When have you ever seen industry , government and select media align together for a social agenda ? Like a better pension for Canadians.
    Industry is about profits.
That should be our first warning sign.
Under Cap and Trade , industries that pollute globally can lower their emissions numbers by investing in alternate energy , or even planting trees.
Ontario will pay 3 times more for wind than convention power rates , 12 times more for ground solar and 15 times more for rooftop solar than conventional power rates..
So corporations looking to reducing their emissions numbers to avoid fines or the cost of buying emissions credits , now have Ontario to invest in alternate energy.
Making enormous profits , and reducing their emissions numbers as well , negating the very point to all this because now industry can continue to pollute and profit as well.
Not quite the magic bullet now , is it ?
Homeowners use 30% of demand and Industry uses 70%.
But what we should all be outraged about is how this is being acheived.
We have had the very freedom and personal rights that make us a free peoplke taken away by a political party , the Liberals.
The GEA was passed to take away your freedom and right to have a say in your community for the benefit of gloabl corporation profits.
No political party has a place in Canadian Politics that did this.
This is a fundemental betrayal of all that Canada is.
    It is evil.
Then you have the public relations issue. The mind control.
The statements , claims , half truths , spin , word smithing that plays to peoples social conscience . The hidden agenda being…..profit.
If this works , and if the public doesn’t stand together in outrage at being manipulated and that includes your children , this campaign will have proven itself.
    What then ?
What kind of future will we leave for our children ?
This media manipulation and theft of our rights must never be tolerated in a democratic society.
We must vote out the people that feel above our laws.
We owe it to our future generations and those that gave their lives so we could have a democratic society.
You simply cannot have people in politics that take away our rights like this so others can make a larger profit.
Please tell them it is unacceptable.
