A promise of light

Winter solstice should be a time to reflect on our fragile existence upon a planet placed in the Goldilocks belt of the Solar System.

Fifty kilometers northwest of Dublin is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Newgrange. Built over 5,000 years ago by farming communities working the fertile plains of the region, this Neolithic monument predates Stonehenge and the Giza pyramids. Initially believed to be a “passage tomb,” this mound—covering an area of one acre—is now recognized as a centre of astrological and religious importance in that age. On the year’s shortest day—the rising winter solstice sun shines down a passageway, cascades over a stone lintel, and lights a chamber in the heart of the mound. The morning light shows that the longest night is over and that the sun will regain its power. Newgrange is a truly fascinating site.

The Swedish tradition of St. Lucia also symbolizes the return to longer days that begins with the onset of winter. The eldest daughter of a family dons a white robe and, with a crown of nine candles, greets the family in song. Our tradition of lighting the Christmas tree comes from Northern Europeans, who brought live trees into their dwellings to cast aside darkness and welcome back the light.

The return of light is also part of Christian belief. Four days after the winter solstice, we celebrate Christmas as the birth of the Messiah, offering gifts to cheer each other in the middle of the darkness.

THIS WEEK’S PICK
Due to inclement weather, last weekend was a disappointment for activities in The County. Do not despair. There is one more weekend left to visit the wineries and do some seasonal sampling of your favourite wines destined to accompany Christmas festivities. Prince Edward County wines make fabulous gifts, and will be greatly appreciated by the lucky recipient.

With an incredible range to choose from— white, red, sparkling or dessert—it’s a great way to support local business with your holiday shopping. Visit the boutiques and galleries on the County “High Streets” to marvel at the unique artisanal gift ideas. Remember, every dollar spent in the County keeps our economy healthy, and promises a brighter future.
