Juliet Clark enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. She was a photography assistant at a naval base in Crail, Scotland where carrier-based pilots were being trained for combat. She witnessed the worst of the Blitz in London, and narrowly escaped injury when a bomb landed nearby.
